Powstał w latach siedemdziesiątych XX wieku w Nowym Jorku w południowej części dzielnicy Bronx, zamieszkanej głównie przez Afroamerykanów. Rap wywodzi się z muzyki rhythm and blues oraz jazzu, jego podstawową cechą jednak jest beat, rytm wybijany na bębnach, obecnie najczęściej elektronicznych. Wynika to z jego początków - melorecytacji przy akompaniamencie rytmu wybijanego dłońmi.
